SENIOR ACCOMIDATIONS

One of the first steps to finding the best care system for your elderly loved one is to understand the different residential options within the senior care system, and the level of care each option can provide. You don’t have to wait for a crisis to occur before you start to take action.
The long-term residences in Alberta are: Manors and Nursing homes Nursing Homes
Nursing homes offer a range of personal and health care services but mainly focus on the medical care aspect. They have the license to offer a higher level of care services such as nursing care, 24-hours supervision, aid getting dressed or in and out of bed, medical management for chronic conditions, and rehabilitation services like occupational, physical and speech therapy.
Manors
They offer personal care, meals, and have round - the - clock staff. They are typically private for profit facilities. Sadly most are built for shareholder profits, not for the residents who reside there. A far better option is a Sherbrooke style manor or nursing home. To learn more about this type of facilities go to the Sherbrooke page of this website.
Sherbrooke Stye Facility
A few years ago W5 visited various senior care lodges across Canada and discovered that there were only four in Canada that were resident directed, and fully endorsed by the Alzheimers Society. Sherbrooke was one of the four. I visited Sherbrooke shortly after W5 aired their program. I talked to the administrator and asked her why there were not more of these lodges built in Canada. She said that in order to build and maintain such a lodge that it took the cooperation of the city, service clubs, churches, volunteers, and grants from the provincial and federal governments.
I then asked her if it cost any more to build and maintain such a lodge. She said no. So why are not more built? The answer is simple. There is no money in building a lodge to meet the needs of the residents, but there is a great deal of money to be made by shareholders when a conventional lodge is built. It is my plan to see if we can get Sherbrooke style manor and nursing home facility built in Didsbury and /or Linden Alberta or both. It is my hope to eventually see this type of facility built all across North America.
It has been my personal experience living in a manor, and visiting loved ones in nursing homes, that many of the residents are simply waiting to die from boredom, fear and loneliness.
